Kelham Island Tavern: Britain's Best Again

Sheffield’s Kelham Island Tavern, forced to close after floods hit in 2007, has won CAMRA’s top gong for a second consecutive year.

It’s the first pub to win the Campaign for Real Ale’s National Pub award twice on the trot.

The Kelham Island Tavern, which was described by 2009 judges as a "small gem", was praised for its quality of beer and attention to detail.

Licensee Trevor Wraith said the accolade was a "great achievement".

Camra pubs director Julian Hough said: "The pub's success is thoroughly deserved due to its high attention to detail, service to the surrounding community and quality in all areas, not least in the beer."

Government appoints minister for pubs

Wentworth MP John Healey has been given the task of heading up a strategy to help save Britain's pubs.
Last week, the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) said the rate of pub closures had slowed from 52 a week in the first half of 2009 to 39 a week.
Healey, also housing and planning minister, is to head a task force of five ministers who will draw up a plan to help pubs.
The BBPA hailed the decision as "great news" and a "clear sign" that its campaigns, Axe the Tax and I'm Backing the Pub, had had an impact.

CAMRA names Champion Winter Beer of Britain 2010

1872 Porter from the Elland Brewery, West Yorkshire, has today been crowned the Supreme Champion Winter Beer of Britain 2010 by a panel of judges at the National Winter Ales Festival in Manchester.

The 6.5% abv porter is described in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide as a 'creamy, full-flavoured porter, with rich liquorice flavours with a hint of chocolate from roast malt, and a soft but satisfying aftertaste of bittersweet roast and malt.'

Winning today is especially sweet for the brewer after finishing in Silver place overall in the 2009 competition.

Dave Sanders, Head Brewer at Elland, was elated to hear of the brewery's success. He said:

'It absolutely brilliant; we came second last year and I am thrilled to finish on top in 2010. We originally started brewing this beer at the West Yorkshire brewery, so there's quite a history behind this Victorian recipe.'

Silver went to Breconshire's Ramblers Ruin, whilst the Bronze medal went to Acorn's Gorlovka Imperial Stout.
